Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are co-founders of the Gemini crypto-exchange based in New York; they may soon join the Libra Project.
A Former Harvard Classmate
In May, it became known that Facebook’s plan to create a new global digital currency led to its meeting with some of the largest US trading houses and stock exchanges, including the one founded by the sworn enemies of Mark Zuckerberg – the Winklevoss twins. According to an accurate source, Facebook CEO would have had talks with at least two cryptocurrency exchanges, Coinbase and Gemini, through which users could securely store their coins or convert the Facebook coin into another currency or currency such as than the dollar.
However, we must not forget that the twins of Winklevoss are unlikely partners for Facebook. After going to Harvard with Mr. Zuckerberg, they sued him for stealing their social networking idea. They finally won a settlement of $ 65 million in cash and Facebook stock.
Welcome to the Party
Libra has been “very good for crypto and very good for Bitcoin,” said Tyler Winklevoss at an event at New York’s 92Y on Tuesday. Over Facebook’s stablecoin, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have a message for Mark Zuckerberg: “Welcome to the party.”
According to Coidesk, Cameron said:
“We’re definitely looking at it in earnest and we’re excited about the project,” and Tyler added:
“Our feeling is, this is the first of many FANG [Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google] companies to have a token project. Our prediction is in the next 24 months almost every FANG Company will have a coin or be working on some sort of project.”
It should also be noted that the Winklevoss are also personally invested in Filecoin and Tezos. They could therefore offer examples of the types of “utility tokens” they would like to offer in exchange with regulatory approval, Tyler said.Even though US lawmakers have not really appreciated Facebook’s global cryptocurrency project, even urging the project to halt development, Libra’s vision of a global currency is also aligning about the goals of the twins for their own exchange. Cameron plans to expand internationally, starting with Europe and Asia.
